Barry Zito’s performance in Game 1 of the 2012 World Series was a good reminder of how inspiring baseball can be. In a few short weeks, Zito has gone from being The City’s biggest sports goat to an Orange October hero who outdueled baseball’s best pitcher in the first game of the Fall Classic. Well-rested Bumgarner ready for Game 2 of World Series

Lefty Madison Bumgarner will get the start in today’s Game 2 of the World Series after having his spot skipped in Game 4 of the NL Championship Series in favor of Tim Lincecum. The 23-year-old had previously been working out some mechanical issues that may have contributed to a decrease in velocity and production over the past several weeks, though he said it’s too soon to tell whether he’ll feel as good as he had most of the year. ‘Knothole gang’ lining up for free viewing of Giants, World Series

They’re teens skipping school and adults driving through the night to line up before dawn in soggy San Francisco — all for a chance to watch a few innings of the World Series for free. The die-hard fans are known as the “knothole gang,” a group prepared to endure all sorts of discomfort for their Giants, just as they did at AT&T Park in 2010 when the team battled the Texas Rangers, and again in September and through the playoffs. This is going to be a very hairy World Series. Giants outfielder Hunter Pence is looking seriously scraggly. Same goes for teammate Sergio Romo, whose facial fuzz has its own Twitter account. Tigers slugger Prince Fielder goes for a double — dreadlocks and an overgrown beard. And not to forget injured San Francisco closer Brian Wilson. His dyed, jet-black thicket inspired a “Fear the Beard” campaign in the Bay Area and beyond. Read More

Rain forces extra prep work for World Series at AT&T Park

The puddles are long gone and the infield dirt was fresh and dry. AT&T Park sure looked ready for a World Series a day after a downpour. Mostly because the San Francisco hitters weren’t the only ones rakin’ at the Giants’ ballpark. Head groundskeeper Greg Elliott and his crew worked until midnight after Monday night’s NL Championship Series clincher, pulled the tarp across the field and began bright and early again at 8 a.m. — with a midafternoon deadline before the Detroit Tigers’ workout ahead of tonight’s Series opener. But today, Zito will get the chance to do what every young pitcher dreams about: Start Game 1 of the World Series. The Giants knew the St. Louis Cardinals had rallied from a 6-0 deficit in the deciding game of their NL Division Series against the Washington Nationals. They were watching on the plane in Ohio while waiting to see which city they would head to for the NL Championship Series. “It could be 20-0 and we still have to go out there and get it done,” outfielder Angel Pagan said following Monday’s Game 7 victory.
