Giants blank Tigers, one win away from World Series title

Ryan Vogelsong
OK, so even Bruce Bochy has to grudgingly admit that his Giants are on a World Series roll. "I'll say this: The club is playing well," the manager said. Well enough to become the first team to throw consecutive Series shutouts in nearly a half-century. Well enough to blank Miguel Cabrera and the Detroit Tigers 2-0 on a chilly Saturday night for a commanding 3-0 lead. Well enough to win their franchise-record sixth straight postseason game and never trail in any in any of them. Read More

Bumgarner regains rhythm, extending his World Series dominance in Game 2 of World Series

Madison Bumgarner tweaked his mechanics and nearly replicated his dazzling performance from the 2010 World Series on Thursday, throwing seven scoreless innings in a 2-0 win over the Detroit Tigers at AT&T Park. The 23-year-old lefty surrendered two hits while fanning eight Tigers batters as the Giants grabbed a commanding 2-0 lead in the World Series. The two hits were the fewest a Giants starter has ever allowed in a World Series game.“What a job he did,” manager Bruce Bochy said. “He had great poise out there.” Read More

Giants have owned one-sided Series thus far

Madison Bumgarner channeled his success in the 2010 World Series and the Giants made big plays from spectacular to bizarre to beat the Detroit Tigers 2-0 on Thursday and also take a 2-0 World Series lead back to Detroit. Now, the Giants will have their two top starters in the postseason, Ryan Vogelsong and Matt Cain, ready to go in games 3 and 4. It’s too early to celebrate, but the Giants are definitely in the driver’s seat. Read More

Giants getting good rolls so far in World Series

Gregor Blanco’s bunt single dribbled about halfway down the third base line and stopped inches fair, next to the white chalk. Several Tigers stood over the ball, almost in disbelief. The Giants are getting all the good bounces so far this World Series, and they’re in control largely because of them. Blanco reached on that perfect bunt in the seventh inning and the Giants went ahead moments later on Brandon Crawford’s bases-loaded double-play ball. San Francisco ended up beating the Detroit Tigers 2-0 on Thursday night in Game 2. Read More

RBI streak by pitchers comes to an end

Giants lefty Madison Bumgarner did his job on the mound Thursday night, but his fruitless day at the plate marked the end of a record-setting streak after pitchers recorded an RBI in each of the previous three games, the first time that had happened in postseason history. “They’re part of the offense too,” manager Bruce Bochy said of his swinging pitchers. “That’s why we, just like a lot of clubs, they take batting practice every day. They bunt every day. And there’s a good chance they could come up there and help themselves, and our guys have done a great job.” Read More

Giants beat Tigers ... in ballpark beer picks

While the Fall Classic between the Giants and Detroit Tigers pits clubs from two very different cities, the distinctive style and taste of each team’s partisans also pour through the beer taps at their ballparks. In a food-and-drink-obsessed city such as San Francisco, a generic “cold beer” at AT&T Park often doesn’t cut the mustard as a companion to the stadium’s pungent garlic fries or a Caribbean-style Cha-Cha Bowl. Revelers can choose between 56 different beers inside the waterfront ballpark. Read More

Sandoval gets overwhelming response to historic performance

Pablo Sandoval had a historic night in Game 1 of the World Series on Wednesday, and a few hundred of his closest friends made sure to offer their thoughts on his three-homer game. “300 text messages, man,” he said Thursday. He didn’t hear from the other living members of the club he joined, Albert Pujols and Reggie Jackson, but he did get one message he didn’t expect. “The president [of Venezuela] sent me a tweet yesterday,” he said. “I still can’t believe it.” Read More

Baseball’s best rarely finish on top in October

Best in baseball? The Detroit Tigers and Giants spent large parts of the season just trying to catch mediocre teams like the Chicago White Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers just to win their divisions. Those up-and-down regular seasons are distant memories now that the Giants and Tigers have raced through the playoffs and have played two games of the World Series. The Giants trailed the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West as late as mid-August before making a strong run to win the division and finish tied with the third-best record in the National League. Another chapter added to the Barry Zito redemption story

Barry Zito’s performance in Game 1 of the 2012 World Series was a good reminder of how inspiring baseball can be. In a few short weeks, Zito has gone from being The City’s biggest sports goat to an Orange October hero who outdueled baseball’s best pitcher in the first game of the Fall Classic. Zito followed up last week’s masterpiece in St. Louis with
5²⁄³ innings of one-run baseball in an 8-3 win over the Detroit Tigers at AT&T Park on Wednesday in Game 1 of the World Series. Read More

Slideshow: Pablo Sandoval hits three home runs, Giants win Game 1 against Tigers 8-3

Babe Ruth, Reggie Jackson, Albert Pujols, and now, Pablo Sandoval. Those are the only four players to hit three home runs in a World Series game, a list the San Francisco third baseman joined as the Giants beat the Detroit Tigers 8-3 on Wednesday at AT&T Park to take a 1-0 lead in the series.
