Raiders cut Darrius Heyward-Bey and Michael Huff at start of free agency

ALAMEDA — The Raiders cut ties with two former first-round picks on Tuesday by releasing starting receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey and defensive back Michael Huff. The Raiders also cut defensive end Dave Tollefson and re-signed cornerback Phillip Adams to a one-year deal before the start of the league year. The moves to get rid of Heyward-Bey and Huff leave just three of Oakland’s former first-round picks on the roster with linebacker Rolando McClain also expected to be released this offseason. Raiders reportedly talk to Mike Holmgren about leadership job

Former Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren reportedly has talked to the Raiders about a leadership role with the team. It was unclear what the position would be, but ESPN.com reported it would include leading the pursuit of a new stadium for the Raiders. Holmgren is familiar with one member of the Raiders front office: general manager Reggie McKenzie, whom Holmgren worked with while coaching the Packers. Raiders want to see what Terrelle Pryor can do

ALAMEDA — After watching the success athletic quarterbacks had this past season in the NFL, new Raiders offensive coordinator Greg Olson wants to see if he has one of those dual-threat runner-passers on his roster. Olson said Wednesday it will be important to see what Terrelle Pryor can do for the Raiders during offseason workouts and minicamps to get a better sense of what the Raiders have at quarterback. Raiders bring in Tony Sparano as assistant head coach, O-line coach

Tony Sparano is headed to the Raiders as their assistant head coach and offensive line coach,  the club announced Wednesday. Before landing the Raiders’ job, Sparano interviewed with several other teams, including the Kansas City Chiefs, for coaching vacancies after one year with the New York Jets. Sparano was fired by the Jets after the 2012 season in which the team’s offense ranked No. 30 in the NFL. Read More

Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie remains committed to Darren McFadden despite a disappointing 2012 season and hopes a new offensive system helps the running back get his career back on track. McKenzie spoke to beat reporters on Thursday for the first time since Nov. 30 and looked back at a disappointing first season in Oakland and ahead to the future.
