SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — When new 49ers kicker Phil Dawson explained to his children he might no longer have uniform No. 4, one of his sons quickly suggested he go with 8. Dawson explained that, too, might be tough — considering it belonged to Hall of Famer Steve Young.
Dawson hopes to have even a little bit of that kind of impact on the San Francisco franchise.

As significant player movement began at the start of NFL free agency, the good news is that the 49ers have general manager Trent Baalke, who knows what’s happening around the league, and an owner in Jed York who knows the importance of having that kind of man in charge.

Agent Carl Poston said in a phone interview that Woodson spent all day Wednesday in sessions with the Super Bowl runner-up 49ers and was happy with the time he spent around the organization. He left the Bay Area early Thursday, Poston said.

Free agent defensive back Charles Woodson had a meeting with the NFC champion Niners in the Bay Area on Wednesday, according to his agent, Carl Poston.

The 49ers parted ways with six-time Pro Bowl kicker David Akers on Wednesday as they released the 14-year veteran.
“He is a true professional who represented himself and this organization with class. We wish him, and his family, all the best,” 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said in a
statement.
In two seasons with the 49ers, Akers compiled 297 points — the most in the NFL during that span. He made 73 of 94 field-goal attempts and all 78 PATs.

The NFC champion 49ers could be in the market for a new starting safety.
San Francisco elected not to place the franchise tag on two-time Pro Bowler Dashon Goldson before Monday’s deadline to do so, making the hard-hitting safety an unrestricted free agent when the new league calendar begins March 12.
Goldson has expressed a desire for a long-term contract after he earned $6.2 million under the franchise tag during the 49ers’ run to the Super Bowl. Placing the tag on Goldson again would have cost the Niners $7.45 million next season.

Randy Moss has apparently read the writing on the wall, as he tweeted farewell to the San Francisco 49ers on Saturday."Wished we could've finished the job. Thanks for the opportunity and good luck in the future 9ers," Moss tweeted.Moss is due to become a free agent on March 12. He signed with the 49ers a year ago after sitting out the 2011 NFL season. In his tenure with San Francisco, he had 28 catches for 434 yards and three touchdowns. He also caught seven passes for 112 yards and no touchdowns in the 49ers' playoff run to last month's Super Bowl.
