SEATTLE — Fueled by its deafening home crowd, the Seattle Seahawks locked up their spot in the postseason Sunday night.
They also reinforced the notion that no one in the NFC wants to see them when the playoffs begin, even if they are a wild card.
Russell Wilson threw a season-high four touchdown passes to move into second place for most TD passes by a rookie. Former Cal star Marshawn Lynch scored two first-quarter TDs, and the Seahawks blew out the 49ers 42-13.

Oh, how things can change in 168 hours.
Last week, Jim Harbaugh was a genius, Colin Kaepernick was crowned as the rightful heir to Joe Montana and Steve Young’s throne, and the 49ers looked capable of beating anybody in the NFL.
But the Seattle Seahawks let the helium out of the balloon Sunday when they handed Harbaugh his most lopsided loss (42-13) in 33 games as an NFL head coach.

Dynamic young quarterbacks. Bullying running backs. Rock-solid defenses. Coaches who don’t much like each other.
Throw in playoff implications and no wonder the 49ers and Seattle Seahawks were given a prime-time showcase.
“There is something about them, man. They’re basically the same team as us and I just hate that fact,” Seattle safety Kam Chancellor said.
The 49ers and Seahawks’ fierce rivalry will be in full view before a national TV audience tonight. And the stakes are high.

Dashon Goldson has a stack of manila envelopes in his locker, filing away the paperwork every time the NFL has fined the 49ers safety.
While he has heard from the league office more than a dozen times in his six-year career, the letters often had little to do with his hard-hitting ways until this season.

Sunday night’s game for the 49ers against the Seattle Seahawks may be even more important than last week’s statement win over the New England Patriots because their postseason standing is at stake.
The 49ers have virtually clinched their division because they’d have to lose their last two games, including a home game against the Arizona Cardinals, to give the Seahawks a chance to slip in. They aren’t going to lose to the Cardinals.

Vernon Davis had a cross-country flight and an entire day off to think about the touchdown that should have been.Colin Kaepernick overthrew the tight end on a would-be 34-yard score during the first quarter of Sunday’s 41-34 victory at New England.
Davis acknowledges he is still getting used to Kaepernick, who is 4-1 since becoming the starter in place of Alex Smith and earned NFC Offensive Player of the Week honors after the upset of the Patriots.

Linebacker Aldon Smith loves playing in prime time. It takes him back to how he spent so many Friday nights in high school under the lights.
Niners teammates Anthony Dixon, Joe Staley and others become similarly nostalgic when they take the field these days with the football spotlight on them.
“Under the lights, you knew it was showtime,” Smith said. “It’s just that feeling you get again from being under that spotlight.”

How did we get from hand-wringing panic heading into Sunday’s game in New England to hang-wringing panic in the wake of an epic upset?
By falling into the all-too-easy trap that is being a 49ers fan.
We’re never gonna make it. ... We’re all gonna die. ... Look at all of these new problems to worry about!
It’s been this way since back in the glory days of Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Roger Craig, Steve Young, Bill Walsh, George Seifert and Eddie D. Just when you start to feel like you own the world, a creeping sense of dread takes over.

Jim Harbaugh’s 49ers hung tough late in the game to stun Tom Brady and the New England Patriots on the road and in the rain to clinch a playoff berth when few expected them to win at Foxborough.
Now, after a long trip home following their 41-34 victory, the Niners (10-3-1) must play a second straight game on the Sunday night prime-time stage when they visit Seattle trying to wrap up a second consecutive NFC West crown.
“This is a huge win for us,” left tackle Joe Staley said. “With Seattle winning, we had to win this game. It felt like a playoff game.”

If you like offensive football, you’re probably in Colin Kaepernick’s corner. Prefer to play it safe? Alex Smith is your man.
The 49ers’ 41-34 win over the New England Patriots on Sunday is an ink blot test for the Kaepernick-Smith quarterback controversy: you’re going to see what you want to see. While the win reaffirmed the 49ers’ status as a Super Bowl front-runner, this debate won’t be completely resolved until the ball is snapped in January.
