Amazon debuts brick-and-mortar pickup store in Bay Area

Amazon Prime and Prime Student members can now order hundreds of items online and pick them up at a company brick-and-mortar store in Berkeley for free, Amazon officials said.

The store, located in Room 235 of the University of California at Berkeley’s Martin Luther King Jr. Student Union at 2495 Bancroft Way, opened Tuesday and at five other locations around the country.

The UC Berkeley store will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Friday and noon to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Amazon officials said customers can order items using the Amazon App and get those items in two minutes or less.

The items available for pick up include daily essentials, snacks and drinks, electronics, Amazon devices such the Echo and Fire TV, as well personal care items.

A selection of Fire tablets and Kindle e-readers are also available.

Prime customers can browse items online and even add items to an online order at the last minute before picking them up at a self-service locker.

Amazon’s Director of Student Programs, Ripley MacDonald said in a statement that customers consistently tell Amazon that they want to receive items faster, and this new service will save customers time.

Amazon officials said they plan to open more locations soon.
