Alley Cat Books robbed of laptop by man with stun gun

Alley Cat Books, a bookstore and gallery in the Mission, just opened shop Monday morning when they were robbed by a man with a stun gun, an employee said.

The man hopped off a bicycle and walked into the bookstore near 24th Street and Treat Avenue around 10:14 a.m., police said. He then grabbed hold of the store’s laptop — which was tethered to a wall with a cable lock — and yanked on it.

Ryan Smith, an employee at Alley Cat, said his coworker “heard a crash” and saw the man stealing the laptop. The thief ran out with it, jumped back onto his bicycle and began to ride away.

The employee gave chase and caught up with the man, but when the thief pulled out a stun gun he backed off.

No injuries were reported to police.

Smith said the store is relatively new, and though there have been several small incidents of theft at Alley Cat — tools and an employee’s phone were stolen in recent years — the robbery is unusual.
