After unusual hot spell, cool weather returns

The heat wave that hit San Francisco, which brought with it temperatures close to 100 degrees this week, seems to have been a fluke since the familiar morning fog and cool temperatures returned to The City on Thursday.

“We thought it was going to be hot again today like the last couple of days,” said Mark Cooper, a New Yorker who was spending Thursday afternoon with his family at the Ferry Building. Pointing to his daughter’s fresh white San Francisco sweatshirt, he said. “We clearly were not ready for the cooler weather today.”

While she’s not quite ready for rain, San Francisco resident Julie Friedland said she was hot Tuesday and actually prefers the normal Bay Area climate. “I don’t have air conditioning, so I’m happy to be cool again,” she said.

Today should be mostly cloudy with a high of 69 degrees and a low of 54. If you’re planning to hit the town tonight, bring a raincoat and umbrella — there’s a chance of a drizzle beginning around 11 p.m.

The probability of rain will stick around until noon Saturday, making for a perfect lazy weekend morning. Once patchy fog clears, temperatures are expected to reach 62 degrees, but residents may want to keep a sweater and a hair tie handy because wind gusts could reach 24 mph, according to the National Weather Service.
