Like Jimmie Ward, Jaquiski Tartt and Eric Reid before him, Adrian Colbert suffered an injury that could force the 49ers safety to miss time.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed on Monday that Colbert broke a bone in his thumb during the Niners’ Week 10 win over the New York Giants. The seventh-round pick in the 2017 Draft flashed impressive speed while making four tackles during the first start of his pro career.

That’s been the life cycle for the position this season: Impress coaches before sustaining an injury.

In Colbert’s case, though, he may be able to avoid missing games thanks to the fact he suffered a less severe injury than his fellow safeties and the bye week.

“We don’t believe he’ll be out too long,” Shanahan said. “… But, it’s something you have to get fixed right away. You don’t want to play with it or it could heal wrong.”

Colbert suffered the injury early in the first quarter, according to Shanahan: “It was extremely tough of him” to continue playing.
If Colbert isn’t able to suit up against Seattle, the 49ers will turn to Antone Exum Jr. — who was signed last week.
