Mayor Ed Lee launched a campaign for Proposition A in Chinatown on Saturday, calling on voters to approve the bond measure that would aid The City in earthquake safety and other emergency response upgrades.

Proposition A, which will appear on the June 3 ballot, would invest $400 million in seismic retrofitting for San Francisco's firefighting water supply system, firehouses and police stations. Much of The City's disaster preparedness infrastructure was constructed over a century ago and is need of repairs, according to the Mayor's "Yes on A" campaign.

Board of Supervisors President David Chiu and Supervisor Eric Mar co-sponsored the proposition with Lee.

The campaign comes in the wake of the 5-alarm Mission Bay fire, which has the mayor and other Prop A supporters calling for quick maintenance to The City's firefighting systems.

In addition to the work on the water supply system, firehouses and police stations, Prop A would also fund the creation of seismically secure facilities for SFPD's Forensic Services Division and for the Medical Examiner.
