5 injured, 1 critical in Richmond District apartment building fire

Five people were injured in a Richmond District fire Friday, at least one of whom jumped from a third-floor window to escape the flames, according to fire officials.

The fire in a three-story, seven-unit building at 800 48th Ave. at Cabrillo Street was reported at 4:49 p.m., according to Lt. Jonathan Baxter.

Two police officers who were the first ones to arrive on the scene immediately began working to rescue occupants, many of whom were trapped in the building.

“People were hanging from windows,” Baxter said.

Three people were rescued and five people were injured. Three were taken to the hospital, including one who suffered critical injuries jumping from a third-story window.

A service dog also perished in the fire, Baxter said.

The fire was brought under control by 5:28 p.m. and did not spread to any neighboring buildings.

At least 10 people have been confirmed displaced by the fire, but Baxter said that number is likely to rise as not all residents were at home. The American Red Cross and city officials are providing assistance at the scene.

Baxter said the fire was accidental in nature.

A report from the Citizen app suggested that a San Francisco police officer was among those injured. Police have not yet responded to a request for confirmation.
