The 49ers bought low on a former first-round pick, trading for former Detroit Lions offensive guard Laken Tomlinson on Thursday, the team announced.
Tomlinson was the Lions’ top pick in 2015, he was exchanged for a fifth-rounder in the 2019 draft, according to media reports.
The former Duke Blue Devil will compete with Zane Beadles and Joshua Garnett — when he returns from injury — for playing time. According to the player grades on Pro Football Focus, all three of those players have similar ability levels — ranked between No. 64 and 68 at their position.
Tomlinson started 10 regular season games and the Lions’ only postseason contest last season.
The deal is pending a physical.
