49ers sign veteran CB Leon Hall to help thinning secondary

Leon Hall has never been named to a Pro Bowl, but he should’ve been. The problem for the 49ers’ latest signee: That was in 2009.

But with injuries decimating the depth in the secondary, the Niners decided to add the 32-year old veteran to a one-year contract.

Hall last played for the New York Giants last season, when he played 12 games, making 20 tackles, two sacks and an interception. He showed he has some left in the tank in the Giants’ playoff game last season, when he logged five tackles and broke up a pass.

Over his 10 seasons in the NFL, Hall has picked off 27 passes — returning three for touchdowns. According to Pro Football Reference, the length and quality of his career compares to fellow cornerbacks Cortland Finnegan, Marcus Trufant and Johnathan Joseph.

In a corresponding move, the 49ers moved Asa Jackson to the injured reserve. Jackson was promoted from the practice team on Sept. 16.

Including Jackson, three cornerbacks were hurt during Sunday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts, prompting the Niners to move Jimmie Ward to cornerback. On Monday, head coach Kyle Shanahan said he didn’t want that to be a permanent move.

Meanwhile, Dontae Jones allowed seven receptions for 127 yards, according to Pro Football Focus and Ahkello Witherspoon left his first game as a pro with a concussion.
