49ers bring back Garoppolo’s guy, Daniel Kilgore, on three-year deal

Daniel Kilgore has played for the 49ers his entire career, which began in 2011. On Wednesday, he signed a three-year deal to extend his stay.

The center is one of the few veterans who remember when the team was bad, then good under Jim Harbaugh before nearing rock bottom with the seasons before Kyle Shanahan took over in 2017. And he’s said, repeatedly, that he wants to be a part of the Niners’ rise.

“We are really happy to come to an agreement on a contract extension with Dan before free agency,” general manager John Lynch said in a statement. “He is very much a leader of this team, and his hard work and commitment to our success provide a great example for our young team. When you come across players who love the game like Dan you do your best to keep them in your building.”

Kilgore, 30, started all 16 games in 2017 after missing three the season prior. But most importantly, he has the public support of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.

“Me and him got on the same page almost instantly when I got here,” Garoppolo told reporters in January. “… We complement each other very well.”

Kilgore raised his play significantly once Garoppolo took over the offense. According to Pro Football Focus, he was the 25th-best center in the league for pass-blocking efficiency before Week 13. After Garoppolo was named starter, he ranked sixth.
