49ers add embattled offensive lineman from Seahawks

The 49ers made another move to add depth on Tuesday. And this one comes from a divisional rival.

The team announced it signed offensive tackle Garry Gilliam to a one-year deal. The contract is worth $2.2 million with $1.4 million of it guaranteed.

Gilliam, 26, was a tight end at Penn State. He was signed by the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent in 2014 after being converted to a blocker.

His track record in Seattle was checkered after having a solid season a couple years ago. Last year, he was benched for a pair of games after falling out of favor with offensive-line coach Tom Cable.

Pro Football Focus ranks Gilliam as the fourth-worst tackle in the NFL to play a minimum of 800 snaps in 2016, when he received a grade of 38.0.

He’ll join Joe Staley (81.4 grade) and Trenton Brown (53.7), the 49ers’ other o-tackles.

General manager John Lynch originally offered Gilliam a mult-year contract, according to media reports, but the tackle declined — presumably to prove himself a year before entering unrestricted free agency.

When Gilliam and the 49ers came to terms on a shorter deal, the Seahawks refused to match it four days before the deadline.
