The San Francisco 49ers have acquired quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo from the New England Patriots in exchange for a second-round draft pick.

Garoppolo, drafted in the second round by the Patriots in 2014, has spent nearly his entire career backing up Tom Brady. He started two games in the 2016 season — while Brady served a four-game suspension for the Deflategate scandal — and threw for more than 400 yards before going down with an injury.

The trade, first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Monday night, comes as the 49ers are still searching for their first win of the season.

First-year coach Kyle Shanahan opted to start QB Brian Hoyer in the first six weeks, but yanked the veteran signal-called midway through the 49ers’ Week 6 matchup with the Washington Redskins, opting for rookie C.J. Bethard in Hoyer’s stead.

Bethard showed flashes of potential in his first NFL appearance, but has been unable to build on that first performance. Garoppolo presumably takes over the starting position immediately.

In a corresponding move, according to ESPN, the 49ers released Hoyer.
