Samoan player arrested in fight at Rugby World Cup Sevens

A professional rugby player was sent to the hospital Saturday after a fight broke out among players off the pitch at AT&T Park during the Rugby World Cup Sevens, police said.

Samoa player Gordon Langkilde, 22, has been arrested on suspicion of assault with force likely to cause great bodily injury and battery with serious bodily injury, both felonies, after allegedly assaulting three players from the Wales squad soon after a Welsh victory.

The fight broke out around 3:30 p.m. after the four players crossed paths in a tunnel connecting the pitch and locker rooms. The cause of the fight is under still investigation, police said. One Welsh player was sent to the hospital with a broken nose and cheekbone. The other two suffered a lacerated lip and eye, respectively.

Tom Williams, of Wales, was forced to miss the remainder of the tournament because of his injuries.

Langkilde surrendered without incident at his hotel Sunday just after 1 p.m., according to police. His bail is set at $100,000. Samoa has provisionally suspended Langkilde.

Prosecutors are expected to make a charging decision Tuesday.
