Two men were convicted or murder Thursday in connection with a 2012 fatal shooting in San Francisco’s South of Market neighborhood.

Trumillion Ballard, a 30-year-old San Francisco, and Anthony Pratt, a 32-year-old Union City resident, were convicted of first degree murder and conspiracy murder in connection with the July 13, 2012 shooting of Gary Smith near the Baldwin Hotel in the first block of Sixth Street, according to District Attorney George Gascon.

The jury reached its verdict after deliberating for less than a day.

“This was an extremely brazen assassination of a victim, who was in front of his pregnant girlfriend,” Gascón said in a statement. “These two defendants will spend the rest of their lives in prison and will be unable to victimize anyone else in San Francisco ever again. We thank the jury for their service.”

Evidence presented in the trial indicated that Smith and Pratt’s girlfriend had had a dispute over money for the purchase of a near near the Baldwin Hotel in the afternoon before the shooting occurred.

Later that night, shortly after 11 p.m., Ballard and Pratt approached Smith and his pregnant girlfriend as they stood near the hotel. Surveillance video footage then shows Ballard pointing a large pistol at Smith and firing three shots, hitting Smith in the head from close rage.

The defendants were later arrested in Union City near Pratt’s home.
